Have you ever purchased a new couch or installed new carpet and experienced that “new” smell? The smell is an example of off-gassing or the release of chemical vapors into the air. Though the “new” smell eventually goes away, the release of airborne chemicals may continue without you noticing.
Off-gassing occurs with many new products, such as carpet, furniture, mattresses, paint, and even some types of insulation. This can especially be true with cellulose insulations containing ammonium sulfate, as well as with many closed-cell or open-cell spray foam insulation products.
Dangers of Off-Gassing
Prolonged exposure to chemical off-gassing can cause headaches, respiratory problems, and illnesses such as cancer. Exposure can even disrupt hormone levels. Off-gassing is dangerous for everyone but is especially dangerous to children and adults with weak immune systems or respiratory problems.
TAP® Doesn’t Off-Gas
Many generic cellulose insulations contain ammonium sulfate which does off-gas. EPA-registered TAP® Pest Control Insulation contains pure-grade orthoboric acid (borates) and does not. Cellulose containing ammonium sulfate can also be dangerous as off-gassing increases when moisture is present. Not only is there no off-gassing with TAP® Pest Control Insulation, but it is also actually an odor reduction agent. The particular molecular structure of the orthoboric acid and the superfine grind attract and eliminate noxious odors such as feces, urine, ammonia, and odors from rotting carcasses. Of course, the source(s) of these odors should be found and eliminated. The use of TAP® Pest Control Insulation, however, provides a residual odor-abating blanket with absolutely no off-gassing.
